Seeds of Whitesloanea crassa, the sole species within its genus and historically recorded from arid regions of northern Somalia.
This species has not been reliably documented in the wild for decades. Botanical surveys of its recorded localities during the 20th century failed to relocate stable populations, and it is widely regarded as endangered and possibly extinct in the wild due to grazing pressure, habitat degradation, and limited access to its native range. Most cultivated plants in circulation today are believed to trace back to a very small number of historic collections.
The plant forms a solitary, erect, four-angled succulent stem with fibrous roots. Flowers are produced near the base of the stem and are typically cream to yellow with darker mottling.
Growth is slow, particularly during early stages.
Seeds are supplied freshly harvested.
Germination & Cultivation Summary
- Mineral, highly free-draining substrate (pumice/grit dominant).
- Sow on surface; do not deeply bury.
- 20–25 °C preferred for germination.
- Bright indirect light; strong airflow.
- Allow complete drying between waterings once established.
- Avoid prolonged exposure below 10 °C.
- Excess moisture is the primary cause of failure.
Care Instructions
Follow these detailed care instructions to keep your Elkhorn Fern thriving:
Mounting
Elkhorn ferns are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow attached to trees. For best results:
- Mount on wood, cork, or similar materials
- Use sphagnum moss around the roots
- Secure with fishing line or plant-safe wire until established
Watering
Proper watering is crucial:
- Soak the root ball and shield fronds thoroughly when the moss feels dry
- Allow excess water to drain completely
- Reduce watering in winter
- Mist shield fronds occasionally
Light & Positioning
Place your fern where it receives:
- Bright, indirect light
- Protection from direct sun, especially midday
- Good air circulation
