Rare opportunity to acquire an established Welwitschia mirabilis, one of the world's most unusual and ancient plants.

Native to the Namib Desert of Namibia and Angola, Welwitschia is famous for producing just two permanent leaves which continue growing throughout the plant's life. With age, the leaves become increasingly twisted and weathered, giving mature plants their distinctive appearance.

This is an established, healthy specimen with broad, substantial leaves and an attractive form. The plant pictured is the exact plant you will receive.

A particularly interesting species for collectors of unusual caudiciforms, succulents and living fossils.

☀️ Light: Very bright light to full sun. Acclimatise gradually when moving into stronger sunlight.

💧 Water: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the mix to dry partially between watering. Reduce watering considerably during cool winter conditions. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

🪴 Soil: Use a very free-draining, predominantly mineral mix. Good drainage is essential.

🌱 Pot: A deep pot is recommended as Welwitschia develops a long taproot. Avoid unnecessary repotting or disturbing the roots.

🌡️ Temperature: Protect young plants from frost and prolonged cold. Warm conditions during the growing season encourage stronger growth.

Please note: Welwitschia can be relatively slow-growing, but with good cultivation it is a fascinating long-term collector plant.

  • Secure with fishing line or plant-safe wire until established
Watering

Proper watering is crucial:

  • Soak the root ball and shield fronds thoroughly when the moss feels dry
  • Allow excess water to drain completely
  • Reduce watering in winter
  • Mist shield fronds occasionally
Light & Positioning

Place your fern where it receives:

  • Bright, indirect light
  • Protection from direct sun, especially midday
  • Good air circulation
