Lophophora williamsii var. caespitosa, commonly known as the caespitose peyote, is a small, globular cactus native to Mexico, but it can also thrive in Australia’s arid regions. This variety is characterised by its clumping growth habit, producing multiple heads that can reach up to 10 cm in diameter. The cactus is typically a pale green colour and features small, tubercled surfaces with a distinctive crown of spines that are often less pronounced than in other cacti.

Growing Tips:

  • Climate: Prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate mild frost. Ensure protection from extreme cold.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix or create your own with sand, perlite, and potting soil to prevent root rot.
  • Watering: Water sparingly during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the plant.
  • Fertilization: Use a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season to encourage healthy growth.

Seed sown, approximately 3 years old, you will receive the actual plant in the picture. Growing in 70mm pot, will be sent bare rooted.

With the right care, Lophophora williamsii var. caespitosa can be a beautiful addition to your succulent collection.

Care Instructions

Follow these detailed care instructions to keep your Elkhorn Fern thriving:

Mounting

Elkhorn ferns are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow attached to trees. For best results:

  • Mount on wood, cork, or similar materials
  • Use sphagnum moss around the roots
  • Secure with fishing line or plant-safe wire until established
Watering

Proper watering is crucial:

  • Soak the root ball and shield fronds thoroughly when the moss feels dry
  • Allow excess water to drain completely
  • Reduce watering in winter
  • Mist shield fronds occasionally
Light & Positioning

Place your fern where it receives:

  • Bright, indirect light
  • Protection from direct sun, especially midday
  • Good air circulation
