For sale is the plant picture, or similar. Currently growing on a Tree Fern tile approximately 10cm wide x 16cm high.
Description: This species is characterised by its slender, cane-like stems that can reach up to 30cm in height. The leaves are narrow and elongated, providing a lush green backdrop for its beautiful flowers. The blooms typically appear in clusters and showcase a delightful palette of colours, ranging from white to pale yellow with subtle purple markings, making them quite attractive to both collectors and enthusiasts.
Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. A location with filtered sunlight, such as under a tree canopy or in a greenhouse with shade cloth, is ideal.
Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C to 30°C during the day and slightly cooler at night. It can tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost.
Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally around 50% to 70%. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain moisture in the air.
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the dormant period in fall and winter.
Soil: Prefers a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss, which mimics its natural growing conditions on trees.
Fertilisation: Feed with a balanced orchid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering.
Care Instructions
Follow these detailed care instructions to keep your Elkhorn Fern thriving:
Mounting
Elkhorn ferns are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow attached to trees. For best results:
- Mount on wood, cork, or similar materials
- Use sphagnum moss around the roots
- Secure with fishing line or plant-safe wire until established
Watering
Proper watering is crucial:
- Soak the root ball and shield fronds thoroughly when the moss feels dry
- Allow excess water to drain completely
- Reduce watering in winter
- Mist shield fronds occasionally
Light & Positioning
Place your fern where it receives:
- Bright, indirect light
- Protection from direct sun, especially midday
- Good air circulation
